What is involved & FAQ?
Learn more about the survey process including what to your organisation and employees can expect.

What is involved?
After you have registered for the survey, your employees will be invited via email (either via us or you) to annoymously complete some online questionnaires over two stages separated by two days. The survey will close three weeks after the start date.
What types of questions are asked in the survey?
The survey will ask participants:
-
the ways in which they think;
-
job characteristics;
-
how effective their relationships are at work;
-
preferences for different manager characteristics;
-
preferences for different follower characteristics.
For more information about these areas and example items, please download the Survey Overview document.
How long will the survey take?
Stage 1 for both team leaders and team members is 20-25 minutes. Stage 2 for leaders is about 20-30 minutes and for team members is 20-25 minutes.
How will our employees be invited to participate?
There are two ways you can choose for your employees to be invited:
-
You can provide us with the email addresses for your employees and have us send out the invitations.
-
Alternatively, you can invite your employees (typically a member of the senior management team). We will send you a copy of the invitation to use.
How long will it take to set the survey up?
Generally speaking, we can have the survey up and ready for collecting responses within one week of receiving notification from you.
How do we prepare our employees?
Preparing your employees is an important step in improving survey response rates and getting the most from the survey. We recommend undertaking the following leading up to, during and after the survey in your organisation:
-
Communicate and market the survey to your employees: for example use email, notice boards, and meetings to inform people of when and what to expect prior to them receiving the survey invitation. We have developed some materials for you to use which can be found by clicking here.
-
Tell them why you are doing this: by giving them a reason you are undertaking the survey, you can help your employees understand why the survey is important and how it will be used to improve the organisation.
-
Emphasise the anonymity of the survey: this increases the likelihood your employees will be honest in their responses so your organisation can gain a more realistic understanding of what is occurring.
-
Send reminders: if you have chosen to invite you employees, we will do this for you. If you have chosen to manage this in-house, we recommend you send reminder emails to your staff to complete on a weekly basis.
-
Provide feedback and take action: provide your employees with some feedback on what was found and what steps are being taken moving forward. If people don't see their feedback as being used to make change, then they may become disengaged with the process.
What reports will our organisation receive?
You can learn more about the types of reports, including examples, and how they could be used in your organisation by reviewing and following the links on the reports page.
When will we get the feedback reports?
Employees who complete both stages will recieve their confidential Cognitive Styles and Constructive Thinking reports via their emails within one week of the survey closing. The Leadership Effectiveness Report will be provided to your organisation and leaders (where at least 5 people respond in either a team or organisation) within three weeks of the survey closing.
What is the minimal number of people required for an organisation?
All individuals who complete both surveys will receive a copy of the Constructive Thinking Report and Cognitive Style Reports. A minimum of 5 people in the team or organisation must respond for the Leadership Effectiveness Report to be generated. Therefore while there is no specific minimum, your organisation will need at least 5 people to recieve this report.
Is there a limit on the size of the organisation which can participate?
We limit the size of the organisations who are eligible to receive the free reports to 250 employees or less. We do though offer organisations with larger employee bases a significantly reduced cost on these reports to cover costs associated with the purchase of some of the survey instruments. Organisations larger than 250 employees should contact us to discuss these options.
Are there any situations in which our organisation or employees will not receive a report?
All employees who complete both stages will receive a confidential copy of their personal Constructive Thinking Report and Cognitive Style Report via their email.
The Leadership Effectiveness Report (Executive/Director Version) will be provided to your organisation. You will recieve this report only where at least five people in the organisation have responded.The Leadership Effectiveness Reports (Team Leader Version) will be provided to the relevant team leaders in your organisation. They will recieve this report where at least five people in their team have responded.
We stipulate five people as a minimum to receive the Executive/Director and Team Leader versions of the Leadership Effectiveness Reports to ensure your employees responses remain confidential.
How will the data you collect be used?
In addition to using the data to generate the feedback reports, the anonymous use of the data will be used to conduct PhD research at Murdoch University. This research will address multiple calls for a more holistic approach to understanding leadership. It recognises the importance of leaders as well as the direct reports’ active role in influencing team, divisional, and organisational successes and failures. In particular, the research seeks to understand how leaders and direct reports thinking styles and the constructiveness of their thinking influence their perceptions of an ideal direct report and leader respectively. In addition, it will also investigate how these styles influence the effectiveness or quality of the leader-direct report relationship. This data may also be used in other future research. To reiterate, where data is used for research, anonymity for participants and partner organisations is assured.
Why are you offering these reports for free?

How is our organisational/staff data protected?
All data which we collect and/or you provide to us will remain confidential and will never be released to any third party unless we are required by law to do so. You agree that we can use your data for research purposes. Prior to any data being collected, a confidentiality agreement will need to be completed and signed by both parties (i.e. the researchers and your organisation). This confidentiality agreement will be sent to you when you register.
Upon request, the researchers will also sign a non-disclosure agreement if required.
Can the survey be altered?
There is some scope for shortening the survey for both leaders and team members.This can be discussed with us but may have implications for the types of reports which will be provided. There is also some scope to include other measures if your organisation wishes (costs to be discussed).
Is there a paper version of the survey?
At present we only offer an online version of the survey. This is to minimize our costs.
Is the survey only in English?
The survey is currently only offered in English.
How long will this offer be avaliable for?
We will offer this service for free to organisations until the researchers have a sufficient amount of data on which to conduct their research. At this point, we may withdraw the offer to new organisations. While there is no plan to cease until this has occurred, we do reserve the right to withdraw the offer at any time without notice or reason.
