While IQ and technical skills are important for leaders, great leaders are distinguished by the ways in which they manage their feelings and emotions in the face of adversity and change. Research shows leaders who think and deal with their emotions more effectively are more effective leaders. In particular, leaders who think more constructively:

  • are better at influencing others;

  • deal with conflict more effectively;

  • are rated as more effective by superiors and subordinates.

Constructive thinking has also been found to relate to beneficial outcomes in general for all employees. This includes:

  • increased performance;

  • increased job satisfaction;

  • less job-related stress;

  • increased willingness to voluntarily take on more workloads.

This report provides leaders and employees feedback on the constructive and destructive components of an individuals thinking and how this influences how they deal with everyday issues and problems. These components include:

  • Emotional Coping

  • Behavioural Coping

  • Categorical Thinking

  • Personal Supertitious Thinking

  • Esoteric Thinking

  • Categorical Thinking

  • Naive Optimism

Importantly, constructive thinking can be learnt. Recent research demonstrates that leaders who are trained to think more effectively, lead more effectively. Changing leaders’ thinking is more amenable to improving leadership behaviours and decision-making than by directly attempting to change behaviour. Indeed, without drawing leader awareness to underlying thinking behind their behaviours they are likely to “revert to form”.

To make the most out of their feedback, recipients are also provided with the Developing Constructive Thinking Coaching Handout. This handout provides a guided approach to help individuals to develop their constructive thinking and includes activities and exercises to help in this process.
